Psychiatric diagnosis is no longer necessary for gender reassignment

“Farewell to gender disphoria diagnosis” says the opening line of an article published in the Society section of the online Catalan newspaper– www.ara.cat.

As of October 2016 the Catalan Department of Health has implemented a new model of approach for transexual individuals who are seeking medical treatment.  The traditional method of seeking such treatment required that the all trans-gender persons had to receive a psychiatric diagnosis in order for them to receive the necessary treatment.  However all that has changed now, with the acception of particular groups (eg: youths) and types of surgical treatments.  The new portal of entry into this treatment method will be through the Centro d’Atenció Primària Manso (Barcelona).
